Since the rise of City as a real power there has been some great clashes.
In one of the biggest games of the Premier League season Manchester City prepare to host Manchester United on Sunday in the first derby of the year.
Since the Citizens have received middle eastern investment and become English champions in 2012, this match has become not only about bragging rights in Manchester, but also plays a big part in who lifts the trophy come the end of the campaign.
Therefore fanatix has decided to take a look back at the best of the Manchester derbies from the last five years.
United 4-3 City – Owen bags an injury-time winner:
Michael Owen’s three year career at Old Trafford only resulted in 53 matches and like much of the striker’s later career, was marred by injury problems.
Owen managed 16 goals whilst with the Red Devils, but the most significant was undeniably the injury-time winner that gave United all three points in a 4-3 thriller.
United 2-1 City: Rooney seals victory with stunning overhead kick:
The following season it was another Englishman that secured the points for United in dramatic fashion, as Wayne Rooney scored arguably the greatest goal of the forward’s career.
With the score at 1-1, Rooney produced an almost unbelievable feat of skill and composure to rise into the air and bury the ball into the net with an overhead kick.
United 1-6 City: Balotelli and Dzeko braces embarrass the Red Devils:
When the Citizens traveled to the Theatre of Dreams at the start of the 2011/12 season, no one quite believed what eventually unfolded.
Under the guidance of Roberto Mancini, City inflicted the worst ever home defeat on United under Sir Alex Ferguson’s reign with a 1-6 mauling.
City 1-0 United: The Sky Blues secure the title:
As the end of the 2011/12 season drew nearer, something quite unusual during the Ferguson era happened – United blew an eight point lead and were undermined by their rivals.
Usually it was the Red Devils securing dramatic triumphs like this, but Vincent Kompany’s header at the Etihad Stadium secured the second derby win of the year for City and also served as a metaphor for the shift in power.
