The 19 year old midfielder is widely regarded as one of the most promising young players in Europe and has attracted the attention of scouts from a range of top European clubs.
PSV Eindhoven were thought to be ready to make a concrete bid but have apparently been put off by Alkmaar’s £8.5 million asking price.
And Verbeek believes Maher would instead be better of learning his trade under the guidance of Gunners boss Arsene Wenger.
‘I think Arsenal would be a good environment for him. He would work with Arsene Wenger, who knows how to bring on these young talents. I think he would improve a lot there, just like Robin Van Persie’ Verbeek said.
The midfielder has been in impressive form this season, scoring five goals in eighteen appearances as Alkmaar find themselves in ninth place in the Dutch Eredivisie.
Maher was born in Morocco but has been capped twice for the Dutch national side and was voted the Eredivisie’s young player of the year last season.
He has previously suggested he would be open to a move to the ‘right’ club.
