With Emmanuel Adebayor at the African Cup of Nations with Togo, Defoe is currently the club’s only recognised senior striker.
But sources close to fanatix revealed that the 29-year-old England international went to hospital after the 1-1 draw with Manchester United on Sunday and underwent a MRI scan and check-up.
Although the extend of Defoe’s problem remains unknown, it looks likely that the former Portsmouth and West Ham forward is set for a spell on the sidelines.
Defoe’s injury coincides with Spurs’ reported interest in Celtic striker Gary Hooper and boss Andre Villas-Boas is understood to have requested video footage of Hooper in action for the Bhoys, as the Portuguese weighs up a bid.
Tottenham have been linked with a host of big-name strikers in recent months, including Leandro Damiao of Internacional and Athletic Bilbao’s Fernando Llorente, but chairman Daniel Levy believes there is limited value in the January market this month and will not sanction any big bids.
Hooper, who was released by Tottenham as a youngster, will cost in the region of £10m, having bagged 15 goals already this season, including two in the Hoops’ successful progression from the Champions League group stage.
But the 24-year-old is also wanted by Norwich City.
Tottenham face Leeds United on Sunday and then meet the Canaries in the Premier League on Wednesday evening, with summer signing Clint Dempsey, who is more comfortable operating in midfield or in the ‘hole’, expected to lead the line in both matches.
