Rafa Benitez has been frustrated in his attempts to sign a midfielder this month, with top target Radja Nainggolan completing a move to Roma on Tuesday and Lyon adamant that Maxime Gonalons is not for sale, despite a £14.1m bid from Napoli this week.
The Spaniard is now ready to turn his attentions to Capoue, who has slipped down the pecking order at Spurs under new boss Tim Sherwood.
The France international was overlooked for Saturday’s North London derby in favour of 19-year-old debutant Nabil Bentaleb and Tom Carroll’s imminent return from a loan spell at QPR, plus to return to the fitness of Sandro and Paulinho, will likely see Capoue struggle further for game-time.
Capoue arrived at Spurs in a £7m deal from Toulouse in the summer and has made 11 appearances for the North London club in an injury-hit season so far.
The 25-year-old can cover at centre half as well as central midfield and this versatility could be crucial in persuading Sherwood and technical director Franco Baldini to keep the powerful player until at least the summer, particularly with Spurs short of numbers at the back.
