The Portuguese knows Pereira well from their time working together at Porto, where the defender was one of Villas-Boas’s most trusted lieutenants, and he even tried to bring him to Stamford Bridge when he was in charge of Chelsea last season, only for the 27-year-old to instead opt to make the move to San Siro last August for a fee of £8 million.
And now the Spurs manager is hopeful of persuading the Serie A outfit to exchange Assou-Ekotto with Pereira, with the Cameroon international having barely featured at all for the North Londoners this campaign due to injury.
In seasons past though, Assou-Ekotto has been a first-choice pick at left back under previous coach Harry Redknapp after he was brought to White Hart Lane from Ligue 1 side Lens for £3.5m in June 2006 and in total, the player has started 175 games for the club in the intervening time, and scoring four goals in the process.
