Gunners boss Arsene Wenger has reportedly made Villa his top target for this month’s transfer window but the Catalans have insisted the 31-year-old is not for sale.
Wenger appeared to admit defeat on Tuesday, claiming there was ‘no’ room for the negotiation with the runaway La Liga leaders for the Spain international.
But in a shock twist, Tottenham are believed to have contracted Barcelona about the former Valencia striker and the Spaniards are willing to send Villa on loan to White Hart Lane if Spurs promise them first refusal on Bale.
The Wales international, 23, has emerged as one of the most coveted players in Europe over the past few seasons and is understood to be a target of both Barca and arch-rivals Real Madrid.
Any offer to Barca of first refusal on the fleet-footed forward would prove controversial, especially because Spurs signed a strategic partnership with Real over the summer.
Villa is understood to be desperate to leave the Nou Camp before Thursday’s transfer deadline, having started just seven of Barca’s 21 league games this season.
The Spaniard, who is his country’s all-time leading goalscorer, has struggled to win back a place in the Barca first-team after suffering a season-ended knee injury early last term.
The striker joined Barca from Valencia for £33m in 2009 and it is believed that Wenger was willing to pay up to £13.8m for Villa’s services.
However, in a cruel twist he could be set for the other side of North London in a move that would surely infuriate the Gunners faithful.
