Villas-Boas interested in talented winger and striker.
Tottenham manager Andre Villas-Boas has revealed that he is still interested in bringingShakhtar Dontesk midfielder Willian and Internacional forward Leandro Damiao to the club.
Discussing Shakhtar’s playmaker with Lancenet, he said: “We contacted Willian and he is one of the players in which we had an interest. I like his style but we could not reach a deal with Shakhtar in the summer.
“Shakhtar are a tough club to negotiate with; they don’t need the money, they can keep their players.”
Villas-Boas also had high praise for Damiao, who was one of the key players in the Brazilian team that won a silver medal at the 2012 Olympics.
He added: “There are many good players here, we are happy, but we obviously follow the best players and youngsters and Leandro Damiao fits in the profile.
“Leandro was spectacular at the Olympics but there are other interesting players. We are paying attention to his progress but he had injuries after the Olympics and may not have played that often.
“If he is within our reach, he’ll always be in our list.”
Spurs were interested in Brazilian duo Willian and Leandro Damiao during the summer but failed to conclude a deal for either player, with both Shakhtar and Internacional demanding too much from the thrifty North Londoners.
Head-coach Andre Villas-Boas was left disappointed by the club’s failure to land any of his top targets – a list that also included Porto’s Joao Moutinho – but there’s no doubt that chairman Daniel Levy tried his best to land the Brazilian pair and the Portuguese playmaker.
Levy flew to Donetsk in an attempt to conclude a deal for Shakhtar’s Willian but returned to North London empty handed, after the Ukrainians refused to budge on their £25m asking price.
Damiao also confirmed that an unnamed Premier League club, almost certainly Spurs, bid for him in the summer and the 23-year-old striker admitted he was interested in making the switch.
Villas-Boas’ latest comments appear to confirm that both players remain on the club’s radar but it will be a difficult task signing either in January.
Mega-rich Shakhtar have progressed to the last 16 of the Champions League and will be in no modd to lose Willian, who was mightily impressive in the group stage, particularly in the two matches with Chelsea. His performances will likely have added a cool £10m to his already inflated price-tag.
Damiao, meanwhile, appears to be enjoying life in his native Brazil and has stressed he is in no hurry to leave Porto Alegre.
While Levy is known as a fierce negotiator, Inter’s president Giovanni Luigi is on another level and claimed over the summer it would take £40m to sign the Selecao international. That was perhaps a tad unrealistic but, like his compatriot Willian, the powerful forward probably remains out of Spurs reach – for now at least.
