That has sparked the interest of the Atletico management, he are keen to unite the player with Colombian sensation Radamel Falcao.
One potential stumbling block however is any potential transfer fee. Los Rojiblancos are unlikely to be able to raise the funds to match the £50 million transfer fee that Chelsea paid to Liverpool to bring the player to Stamford Bridge.
There is likely to be significant room for negotiation however with the Spanish international having failed to hit form now for a number of seasons. That is likely to at least half the fee the London club would to recoup.
Atletico may be able to work with that, especially if they see through a deal that sees striker Adrian Lopez leave for Arsenal.
That deal may not go through this transfer window however, with a deal more likely to be concluded in the summer.
Chelsea may instead be willing to listen to a loan offer in the meantime, with the Blues management seeing little point in persevering much longer with the player who continues to draw criticism from players and pundits alike.
