Who shone and who could have done better?
Arsenal started their Champions League campaign steadily after a 1-2 victory against Olympique Marseille.
The Gunners have a tricky group, that also includes Borussia Dortmund and Napoli, so fanatix looks at which of their stars may need to improve before their next tie and which are on top form.
The left-back had a superb game as the Englishman continues to keep Nacho Monreal out of the team and is developing into a real talent for the club.
Gibbs’ pace gave the Gunners mobility down the flank that they would have lacked with Monreal and Thomas Vermaelen and the 23-year-old set up Aaron Ramsey for what turned out to be the winner.
The Welshman is continuing a brilliant season for the north London outfit with a another goal in this match that won the game for the away side.
It’s now six in seven for the 22-year-old and Ramsey is finally stepping out of the shadow of Jack Wilshere to become an important talent in the midfielder’s own right.
The forward opened the scoring with a well taken volley midway through the second half and despite being substituted for Monreal, had already made the impact.
After such a fine start to the Premier League season – the Frenchman has netted in every match so far – Giroud looked a little lost up-front against Marseille.
The 26-year-old was kept quiet all night and the team had to rely on their midfield to provide the goals.
Not an awful performance from the Germany international but the centre-back has certainly had better.
Mertesacker almost put the put the ball into the defender’s own net as a sliced clearance was only kept out by the determination of Gibbs.
Sagan also wasn’t terrible and improved in the second half, but looked a little wayward in the first and could not find the balance between defence and attack.
The Frenchman is likely to keep Carl Jenkinson out of the side at the weekend however.
