Before Super Bowl XLIX got underway, fans were first treated to a performance by Grammy winner John Legend and his rendition of America the Beautiful before the iconic American National Anthem by Idina Menzel, the star of the hit Disney movie Frozen. With Menzel giving her unique take on the American classic, the audience got to see takes of American army soldiers in Afghanistan and were treated to flyover over the stadium.
After the Anthem was over, the New England Patriots and Seattle Seahawks captains went to the middle of the field for the coin toss. With Patriots DT Vince Wilfork making the call for Heads, the coin came up tails, giving the win to the Seattle Seahawks, who deferred their decision to the second half.
The Patriots, in turn, decided to receive the ball to start the game.
