Uruguayan says it is just part of the game.
Controversial Liverpool striker Luis Suarez has admitted that he has dived to win his team’s penalties this season.
The Uruguay international has attracted heaps of controversy already this campaign, both in his propensity to win the Reds spot-kicks, as well as his apparent use of a hand to score the Merseysiders’ winning goal in their recent FA Cup third-round win at non-league Mansfield Town.
However, it was the front man’s attempted ‘dive’ in the penalty box in the Premier League in order to win his side a late penalty in their Premier League encounter against Stoke City at Anfield last autumn that attracted most headlines, with opposition manager Tony Pulis subsequently labelling the player an “embarrassment” for his actions.
“Football is like that. Sometimes you do things on the field that later you think ‘why the hell did I do that?,’” Suarez said in an interview with Fox Sports Argentina.
“I was accused of falling inside the box in a match, and it’s true I did it that time, because we were drawing against Stoke at home and we needed anything to win it.
“But after that everybody jumped out to talk – the Stoke coach, and the Everton coach … I understood that the name Suarez sells (papers).”
