Who’s up for strawberries and cream?
Gallagher’s previous victory on the tour came nine years ago at St Andrews, but he is just 18 holes away from doubling his win tally after shooting a career best round of 62 – a shot lower than he posted on the opening day at the Emirates Golf Club. He is attempting to go one better than when runner-up to Lee Westwood in the same event 12 months ago.
Gallagher’s 10-under par round leaves him sitting on a 21-under par total after 54 holes, three shots ahead of South African Richard Sterne with Dane Thorbjorn Olesen a further three shots adrift in third place.
Gallagher’s round was concluded when holing a 40-yard bunker shot for an eagle having already achieved the same feat at the par-5 13th. He also struck six birdies to record his best ever round in the professional game.
“I’m excited and looking forward to tomorrow,” world number 111 Gallagher told Sportinglife. “I’m pretty familiar with his course – I come out here on holiday with the family. I struggled last week (in Qatar) and my driver cracked, but with the new one I’m hitting more fairways and I’ve putted really good.”
