Western Bulldogs captain Ryan Griffen has sensationally requested a trade to the Greater Western Sydney Giants.
However, the Bulldogs have released a statement stating that Griffen is “a contracted player and he will be required to fulfil his contract in 2015”.
Griffen was appointed captain of the club last season, but the player’s management company, Elite Sports Properties, released a statement saying the 28-year-old was looking for a fresh start outside of Victoria.
“At 28, Ryan feels a fresh start outside Melbourne after 202 games with the Western Bulldogs is the right thing for him,” the statement said.
“The decision has not come lightly and has been extremely difficult for all involved.”
Giants chief executive David Matthews said the club will now work with the Bulldogs to reach an adequate deal.
“We will now work with the Bulldogs to do a fair deal in the interests of all parties during the trade period,” he said.
