Despite the distraction of potentially breaking another record this weekend, Peyton Manning insists that he is fully focused on helping the Denver Broncos beat the San Francisco 49ers.
Manning is just two touchdowns short of matching Brett Favre’s record, although he may find life a little more difficult against his next opposition.
Favre reached his 508 touchdown passes in 302 regular season games while Manning is sitting on 506 entering his 264th contest as the Broncos look to improve on their 4-1 record.
The Broncos face the San Diego Chargers next week with Manning conceding that there is “plenty to think about” in the next fortnight, but the initial concern will be the Niners.
Tight end Julius Thomas is also looking for his own record as after catching nine of Manning’s 15 touchdown passes so far in 2014, and so he will be looking ahead at surpassing Rob Gronkowski’s 2011 single-season tight end record of 17.
However, despite key injuries to the likes of Aldon Smith, NaVorro Bowman and Patrick Willis, the 49ers rank second in the NFL behind the Detroit Lions in total defense after giving up just 287.2 yards per game.
In addition, San Francisco appeared to hit their stride offensively against the St Louis Rams last weekend with quarterback Colin Kaepernick accounting for 343 passing yards and three touchdowns on 22-of-35 passing.
Nevertheless, he has conceded that the Broncos have two great ends to rush the passer, and the Niners must be ready for it after ensuring he wasn’t sacked at all last time out.
The 49ers have won the last two meetings as the teams have split a 12-game all-time regular-season series, but it remains to be seen if Manning can lead the Broncos to victory and surpass Favre in the process.
