The San Antonio Spurs will likely face their most difficult test thus far in their 19-game winning streak as they head to Oklahoma City to take on the Thunder.
The Spurs (59-16) have cruised through the last quarter or so of the regular season and know that a win on Thursday night would effectively secure the top seed in the Western Conference, giving them a five-game lead over OKC.
However, they have dropped the last four meetings as well as their last six visits to Oklahoma City, which gives the impression that their franchise-record winning streak could be in serious danger.
Nevertheless, with the roster all producing and key players gaining valuable rest, it remains to be seen whether or not this is just another test for coach Gregg Popovich’s men to pass.
While the Spurs will be playing on consecutive nights, the Thunder haven’t been in action since Sunday, with their win over Utah their sixth victory in seven games.
Kevin Durant continues to lead the line for them but Scott Brooks has played up the importance of allowing his players to also rest during their extended break with a gruelling post-season undoubtedly ahead.
Durant is averaging 35.9 points over his last seven games, but against a team like the Spurs it will require more from the entire unit to get the job done, particularly with Thabo Sefolosha, Kendrick Perkins and Reggie Jackson all likely to miss out.
San Antonio have no injury concerns heading into this one, and it promises to be an intriguing encounter as it also remains to be seen whether or not Popovich even goes with his starters for the majority of the game.
Point guard Tony Parker revealed that his coach is arguably waiting for the streak to end so he can get back to managing minutes more and keeping everyone focused, but a win over the Thunder would be a significant blow so close to the post-season.
