Who’s the best passer? Carrick, Ramires, Ramsey or Toure…?
fanatix compares and ranks the Premier League passing statistics of Manchester United’s Michael Carrick, Arsenal’s Aaron Ramsey, Chelsea’s Ramires and Manchester City’s Yaya Toure.
Stats courtesy of WhoScored.
4) Michael Carrick – Manchester United
84% pass completion rate
72 passes per game
6 key passes
31/42 successful long balls
The England man actually has the worst pass accuracy of any top four midfielder, but his key passes and ability to intercept opposition attacks more than make up for it. In terms of simple passing statistics though, Carrick ranks fourth in this list, completing less passes per match than Yaya Toure and Aaron Ramsey, and having a worse long ball accuracy than the pair also.
3) Ramires – Chelsea
88% pass completion rate
66 passes per game
7 key passes
18/24 successful long balls
Ramires’ 88% pass completion rate is high, but his 66 passes per game is average, especially as his boss Jose Mourinho is encouraging a quick, short passing brand of football this season. The Brazilian has made more key passes than anyone else on this list however, which is interesting considering he arguably plays deeper than any of the other three.
2) Aaron Ramsey – Arsenal
89 % pass completion rate
77 passes per game
4 key passes
18/24 successful long balls
The young Welshman has enjoyed a brilliant start to the season, and was rightly awarded the Premier League Player of the Month award for September. His passing stats show how integral he has come to Arsene Wenger’s side. Ramsey has 89% of his passes this season, averaging 77 per game. Although he has only made four key passes, he has scored three league goals, and completed all but six of his long balls.
1) Yaya Toure – Manchester City
90% pass completion rate
79 passes per game
4 key passes
28/37 successful long balls
The giant Ivorian has been fantastic so far this term in his slightly altered role for City. Toure now sits deeper alongside Fernandinho rather than playing off a striker, and he’s adapted brilliantly, completing 90% of his passes, averaging 79 per game. He completely dominated United’s new signing Marouane Fellaini in the Manchester derby, and will key to new boss Manuel Pellegrini’s hopes of winning a debut Premier League title.
