Port Adelaide have signed explosive goalkicker Johann Wagner after he was crowned the winner of reality TV show The Recruit.
The Port Lincoln native had the choice of Port, Gold Coast Suns and Greater Western Sydney after beating finalists Chris Moreland and Bradie Foster to the rookie contract on offer to the winner of the show.
The winner of the show was judged by the recruiting heads of each of the AFL’s clubs and all clubs were able to bid for the eventual winner to be listed as a ‘Catergory B’ rookie.
Port Adelaide’s national recruiting manager Geoff Parker says Wagner’s athleticism means he would suit coach Ken Hinkley’s game style.
“He’s very athletic, and should be able to fit into our program at Port Adelaide; the way we try to play the game,” Parker told the club’s website.
“He’s got speed, agility, good mark and knows how to kick a goal.
“We’ll get to work on him when he arrives at the club and hopefully he’s prepared to work hard and get down to work straight away.”
Delisted contestant Padraig Lucey is set to follow Wagner to the AFL, with reports emerging Geelong are looking to build upon its ruck stocks.
