The three-time Masters winner finished in a flurry of birdies – picking up four birdies in the final four holes to sign for a seven under par 64 and move to a 24-under total for three rounds at TPC Scottsdale in Arizona.
Mickelson was two-under for his opening nine, but five birdies on the way home earned him a back-nine score of 31. That included holing a 15-footer on the closing hole as he struck a fourth straight birdie.
He is six shots clear of fellow American Brandt Snedeker, who lost ground on Mickelson despite shooting a bogey-free six-under par 65, while Irishman Padraig Harrington is two shots further back in third place which he is tied with Ryan Moore for.
Harrington jumped up 17 places after posting the lowest score in round three. His eight-under par 63 included birdies at the opening three holes and two more in a front nine 30, while he posted an eagle and a bird on his way home.
