The San Antonio Spurs take on the Oklahoma City Thunder on Monday night as the pair renew their rivalry with a place in the NBA Finals the ultimate aim.
Despite their ageing core, the Spurs were able to finish the regular season with the best record in the NBA, and as a result will potentially benefit from home court advantage.
While Kevin Durant joked with reporters that point guard Tony Parker “doesn’t play like he’s 32 years old”, Manu Ginobili (37) and Tim Duncan (38) are coming to the end of their illustrious careers and after the heartbreak of last season, they are seeking out immediate retribution.
Durant hailed coach Gregg Popovich and his ability to bring in players who fit into his system and execute year on year, but what they have struggled with is containing the athleticism and speed of the Thunder in recent years.
Duncan hailed the impact of Russell Westbrook in the playoffs thus far as the Thunder’s dynamic duo have effectively dragged them through some tough situations, but with power forward Serge Ibaka expected to miss the entire series, they may have some headaches ahead.
Oklahoma City won all four regular season meetings but will need rookie Steven Adams to step up inside and will have to make the most of their high-tempo basketball in transition in particular.
Meanwhile there are still question marks over Parker’s hamstring despite the Frenchman insisting that he felt better and was ready for Game 1, while Kawhi Leonard will be tasked with attempting to slow down Durant.
Another key aspect of this series could be the Spurs’ depth, with the likes of Patty Mills, Marco Belinelli, Boris Diaw and Ginobili likely to play their roles and become the difference makers depending on the scenario.
