Pochettino was appointed Saints manager on Friday following Nigel Adkins’ shock dismissal.
After guiding the club to a respectable 0-0 draw with Everton in his opening match, the 46-year-old will now turn his attentions to the transfer market.
Owner Nicola Cortese is reportedly ready to back the Argentine with funds to make new additions before the transfer window slams shut in ten days and Pochettino wants Alvarez to be his first signing on the South Coast.
The 27-year-old Argentinian is Espanyol’s club captain but only broke into the La Liga club’s first team in 2011, when Pochettino promoted him above Cameroonian Carlos Kemeni.
The former Rosario star’s form in Spain earned him a call-up to the national squad last year but he is yet to make his debut for the South American giants.
Alvarez is out of contract at the Barcelona-based club this summer and Pochettino is confident that a £2.5m bid will be enough to force his former employers to sell the custodian.
Adkins struggled to settle on a number one at St Mary’s, with Artur Boruc, Paulo Gazzaniga and Kelvin Davis all enjoying time being the sticks this season.
Pochettino opted for Polish international Boruc against the Toffees but wants Alvarez to be the club’s long-term number one.
