Eto’o was on the verge of becoming a Gunner back in 2000.
New Chelsea signing Samuel Eto’o has admitted the striker nearly joined Arsenal back in 2000, before eventually making the switch to Barcelona.
The Cameroon international says that a deal to join the Gunners was extremely close, but believes the 32-year-old made the right decision in choosing not to go to north London.
“I met Luis [Aragones – former Barca manager] at a crucial moment in my life where I had to take the right direction – and thanks to him I did,” Eto’o told the Sun.
“I was about to sign that very afternoon at Arsenal and maybe I would have never been the player I am today.
“Luis picked me, then I ended up joining Barcelona. That decision changed everything.
“I had lots of opportunities to come to England, but I am glad to finally be here now.”
The African did not enjoy the best of starts in English football, with the forward being criticised by many during the Blues’ 1-0 defeat to Everton on Saturday.
It was Eto’o’s first match since reuniting with manager Jose Mourinho, after the pair enjoyed a year of success at Inter Milan during the 2009/10 campaign.
However, despite success in Spain and Italy – the attacker has won three Champions League titles, Serie A and three La Liga trophies – it seems that it may take some adjusting to life in west London.
The loss at the Toffees was the club’s first defeat in the Premier League since Mourinho returned to the side following a six year absence.
