The Houston Rockets will reportedly use guard James Harden as a lead recruiter in their chase of Kevin Durant in free agency in 2016.
Despite the fact that there are still two more years left on Durant’s contract with the Oklahoma City Thunder, speculation has already started regarding his long-term future.
While many believe that the Washington Wizards will provide the most likely competition given that they would offer the league MVP the opportunity to return home, the Rockets are said to be ready to make a move.
Having missed out on Carmelo Anthony and Chris Bosh in free agency earlier this year, the Rockets will be well placed in terms of cap space moving forward into next summer and the year after.
Houston are expected to move for a point guard next summer with Rajon Rondo among the names linked, but looking further ahead, Harden could well play a key role in recruiting Durant.
“The Rockets are widely expected to take a step back this season, thanks to all the depth they squandered on the Bosh dice roll, but they expect to have significant salary-cap room next summer — when they can chase point guards as accomplished as Goran Dragic and Rajon Rondo if they choose — as well as in the summer of 2016,” Marc Stein of ESPN reports.
“Which is when, sources say, they’d like to give Harden an opportunity to serve as Houston’s lead recruiter in the pursuit of a free agent named Kevin Wayne Durant.”
Rockets general manager Daryl Morey conceded that the franchise likes to take “big swings” when it comes to free agents, and that is partly the reason behind their ability to acquire both Harden and Dwight Howard in recent years.
However, he conceded that they are liable to missing out now and again as seen with Anthony and Bosh, but he is confident that moving forward, they will continue to build on their roster and become a legitimate title contender in the coming years.
