NBA reporter suggests that Gasol could well be Celtics’ Plan A…
The Boston Celtics are keen to keep hold of point guard Rajon Rondo, and could move to add Marc Gasol to the roster next summer in order to convince him.
Rondo is heading into the final year of his contract this season, and while he is set to hit free agency next summer, the consensus is that both the Celtics and the point guard want to sign on a new deal.
While that has yet to happen, it has inevitably led to further speculation with many suggesting that the Celtics will look to trade him if they are unable to re-sign him by the deadline rather than re-sign him for the max-level contract he reportedly wants.
However, Boston-based Sporting News NBA reporter Sean Deveney believes that not only do the Celtics want to keep Rondo, but they will eye pairing him with another star free agent in Memphis Grizzlies center Marc Gasol.
“If keeping Rondo and paying him a max deal is going to help them get somebody like a Marc Gasol or somebody of that caliber, then that’s what they have to do. If that means overpaying Rondo somewhat in the short term here, if that’s what it takes to get that other star player, then that’s what they’re going to do,” Deveney noted in a recent episode of the Celtics Beat podcast.
Boston have plenty of cap space to attack free agency, but with Kevin Love moving to the Cleveland Cavaliers, they have been forced to reassess their priorities ahead of next summer.
While trading Rondo and developing rookie Marcus Smart also remains an option, it remains to be seen what Rondo’s next move is as that will ultimately allow the other pieces to fall into place.
