Westbrook suffers fractured hand: OKC point guard latest injury blow for team.
Durant won’t rush back from injury: MVP recovering after surgery on foot.
Oklahoma City Thunder star Russell Westbrook could undergo surgery to repair a fracture in his right hand, according to team general manager Sam Presti.
With league MVP Kevin Durant already sidelined after undergoing surgery on a fracture in his foot, the Thunder could well lose their explosive point guard for a significant amount of time.
Presti revealed Westbrook underwent further evaluation on Friday and the process will continue Saturday to determine what the best course of action is, but he didn’t rule out surgery and suggested that an official timetable will likely follow the decision on a procedure.
“At this stage, surgery is a consideration for this particular injury,” Presti told ESPN.com.
“If there were to be a procedure, we would provide a time frame at that point.”
Westbrook sustained the injury during the 93-90 loss to the Los Angeles Clippers on Thursday, with an X-ray revealing a small break in his second metacarpal.
The injury occurred as he inadvertently hit team-mate Kendrick Perkins’ elbow while going for a rebound, and while Westbrook had played in only nine minutes to that point, he was forced to head back to the locker room and did not return.
It is a huge blow for the Thunder particularly considering that Durant’s injury meant that the responsibility had fallen on Westbrook’s shoulders to lead the team in his absence. It started well for the 25-year-old as he scored 38 points in 33 minutes against the Portland Trail Blazers in the season opener.
However, he now joins Durant, Mitch McGary, Anthony Morrow, Reggie Jackson, Jeremy Lamb and Grant Jerrett in the treatment room, although the team is optimistic that both Jackson and Lamb can return in the coming week.
