Relationship deteriorated badly after James left for Miami four years ago…
Cleveland Cavaliers star LeBron James has insisted that he is now on the same page as franchise owner Dan Gilbert after their relationship went through a rocky spell.
Gilbert wrote a scathing article in the aftermath of James’ decision to leave Cleveland for the Miami Heat when he became a free agent in 2010, with the two-time NBA champion also receiving a general backlash from the NBA fans.
However, after prizing him away from Miami this past summer to return to Cleveland, Gilbert and James appear to be getting along just fine ahead of the season opener against the New York Knicks on Thursday night.
The Cavs also acquired Kevin Love to form a new ‘Big Three’ with James and point guard Kyrie Irving, and having added quality depth and experience in Mike Miller and Shawn Marion, there is a high level of expectation and excitement surrounding the franchise this year.
“I think it’s really good,” James said when asked about his rapport with the Cavs’ owner. “We had one bad moment, and it just overshadowed all the great times we had together, and now we’re back together.
“We both have something in common: That’s to bring a championship back to this city, and that’s what it comes down to. That’s what our thrive is, that’s what our drive is, and we have an opportunity and we have an obligation to represent this team and this franchise the right way.”
Gilbert insists that he will not be making any predictions about the future but he commended the entire organisation for working hard to put this together as they are now considered the favourites for the championship this season.
Coach David Blatt insisted that it was an unfair label for this new-look team, especially to their rivals who have already proved their credentials. However, with arguably the most talented roster in the NBA, the Cavs will be expected to be challenging at the business end of the season.
