Parsons is too heavy says Carlisle: Mavs coach says new recruit needs to lose weight.
Dallas Mavericks coach Rick Carlisle has apologised to Chandler Parsons after publicly singling him out in the rift over his need to shed weight in pre-season.
Carlisle released a statement on the matter after making a point on Friday following the loss to the Oklahoma City Thunder that Parsons needed to lose weight.
It was the second time since training camp started that the Mavs coach made the comment about his prized free-agent addition this summer, with Parsons making a conscious effort to add bulk in case he was asked to step in and deputise at power forward for Dirk Nowitzki.
However, Carlisle believes that the additional weight has had an adverse effect on his game, with his shot looking a little wayward while he also tired quickly during the pre-season outing.
Nevertheless, the Dallas coach has now apologised publicly for his remarks and believes that his actions were not befitting of the organisation.
“It was unfair and inappropriate to single out Chandler Parsons after the game Friday night,” Carlisle wrote in a statement issued Sunday afternoon.
“I have apologized to him and the entire team for this error in judgment. Not only is Chandler Parsons one of our best players, he is also one of our hardest working players and the kind of high-character person we strive to bring to our city and franchise.
“I also made it clear to our players and staff this morning that this type of bad example is not acceptable and beneath the dignity of a championship organization like the Dallas Mavericks.”
Parsons has responded to the statement by insisting that he has a strong relationship with his new coach and believes that the apology “shows what kind of guy he is”. The former Houston Rockets star went on to add that the entire team are in it together this season and they are ready to move forward.
Parsons signed a three-year deal worth $46m with the franchise this summer and has insisted that he will continue to work “extremely hard” in order to make himself available for his coach.
