Carmelo Anthony has “unfinished business”: Knicks star ready for challenge of new season.
Anthony to stay with Knicks for life: Melo doesn’t want to go through free agency again.
New York Knicks forward Carmelo Anthony has insisted that he believes he is the “most underrated star” in the NBA but insists he will gain the respect he deserves.
The 30-year-old tested free agency this past summer and visited the likes of the Chicago Bulls and Los Angeles Lakers, but ultimately he opted to sign a new contract with the Knicks to stay in New York for the foreseeable future.
While some have lamented his decision to not move on and challenge immediately to win an NBA championship elsewhere, Anthony is confident that he will be able to play a significant role in getting the Knicks back in a position to compete.
However, on a personal level, he believes that he is the most underrated star in the league but he doesn’t let it worry him too much.
“I think I’m the most underrated superstar that’s out there (laughs) but that doesn’t matter to me,” Anthony told ESPN.
“I know what I’m capable of doing. I know the grind and the hard work I put in to this,” Anthony said. “I know how consistent I’ve been over my career. To do it day in and day out and night in and night out on a very consistent basis year in year out, I know what I can do and I know the work I’ve put in.”
“So as far as caring about if I’m underrated as a superstar, and getting the respect I deserve, I don’t worry about that. In due time if everything goes well, I will get it.”
Melo was responding to a question in relation to being the most underrated because he hasn’t won an NBA title yet, but there is no argument against the fact that he is one of the best scorers in the league.
Anthony won the NBA’s scoring title in 2012/13 and finished second to Kevin Durant last year, but ultimately, the thing that perhaps keeps him at a level below the likes of Durant and LeBron James, is his inability to translate that into success as a team.
The Knicks came close two years ago and looked strong in the post-season, but they struggled last year before missing out on the playoffs and with a new team president in Phil Jackson and new coach with Derek Fisher, the pressure is on to see whether or not they can turn things around.
