The IPL is back for 2014 and reigning champions Mumbai Indians open the seventh edition of the competition against the 2012 winners Kolkata Knight Riders.
For the first time since its introduction in 2008 the tournament will be played away from India for part of the fixture list, with the first third staged in the United Arab Emirates.
Mumbai retained their maximum of five players ahead of the auction so that the core that won the IPL in 2013 remained for this year.
Veterans Ricky Ponting and Sachin Tendulkar have both now retired, but Lasith Malinga, Kieron Pollard, Ambati Rayudu, Harbhajan Singh and captain Rohit Sharma were kept on.
In addition they have bought 2013 Orange Cap winner Michael Hussey to try and settle things at the top of the order, whilst all-rounder Corey Anderson is expected to be an exciting signing.
For Kolkata they chose to retain just two players from the previous year in skipper Gautam Gambhir and Sunil Narine.
However, they also chose to re-sign Shakib Al Hasan, Jacques Kallis, Yusuf Pathan and Ryan ten Doeschate in the 2014 Auction.
Decisions will need to be made in the starting XI to see if Chris Lynn, Andre Russell and Morne Morkel get places as the Knight Riders look to improve their fortunes.
