There is a deep rivalry between the pair that runs back for years.
As of the summer of 2010 the rivalry between current Chelsea and Manchester City managers Jose Mourinho and Manuel Pellegrini started.
The now City boss was given a brief one-year spell in charge of Los Blancos having impressed with Villarreal and taken the La Liga club to a Champions League semi-final.
Yet such is the charisma of Mourinho and the lust of the limelight of Madrid president Florentino Perez, that when it became apparent the Portuguese ace would leave Inter Milan the Spanish giants jumped at the chance.
Of course this meant dumping the well respected Pellegrini after less than 12 months for the simple crime of not being the former FC Porto maestro.
Mourinho had just won the treble with Inter of course, but that did not mean the South American wouldn’t have felt harshly done by – admittedly by Perez rather than the 50-year-old.
A short while later and Pellegrini was back in management and in charge of Malaga, another modest club that the 59-year-old led to great things.
Mourinho’s thoughts on the matter were less than complimentary.
“If they [Madrid] get rid of me, I won’t be going to coach Málaga,” the Blues boss was quoted by FourFourTwo.
“I will go to a big club in the Premier League or Serie A.”
Now the pair face each other in the Premier League on Sunday at Stamford Bridge, with just two places and one point separating the title contenders.
Whilst Mourinho craves the attention Pellegrini is a much more reserved character, but make no mistake both will be going all out to win this match – perhaps more than ever.
