The 32-year-old has missed the last two matches for the west London club after picking up a rib injury.
It also meant that Cole was unavailable for England’s two crucial World Cup qualifiers against Montenegro and Poland, although Leighton Baines filled in and impressed.
However, the return of the defender to the Blues lineup will be a significant boost to the side as there are still question marks over the capabilities of backup Ryan Bertrand.
Cole’s club form has been indifferent this term and has not been to as high a standard that is usually expected of a player considered to be one of the best English full-backs of all time.
That being said, even when the player is not at 100% the Englishman provides a defensive nous to the club’s back four that Mourinho so greatly respects.
The 50-year-old likes to build teams around a solid defence and Cole fits the bill in a sturdy back line that has conceded just five goals this term – the second best defensive record in the whole division behind Southampton.
If the side are to achieve success under Mourinho this year then it is likely the foundation will be built on a solid back four.
