This shapes as something of a must-win game for both the Melbourne Renegades and the Brisbane Heat.
The Renegades are desperate to register their first competition points for BBL 03, and what better place to do that than in front of their home crowd for the first time this summer. The Renegades were the surprise packet team of BBL 02, storming into the Big Finals by virtue of winning all four regular season games at home.
There’s also the revenge element of this game; it was the Heat who ended the Renegades surge to the Big Final last season, and they did it on the Renegades’ home turf, too.
For Brisbane, they batted superbly well on Saturday night against Hobart at the ‘Gabba, and their 209-3 was – briefly – the highest innings total in T20 Big Bash League history. They’ll still be stinging from seeing their mark bettered less than two hours later, and will be looking to make up for that slip-up in this match.
The Heat will travel to Melbourne without their captain, James Hopes, who suffered an abdominal muscle strain while fielding during Saturday’s thrilling final over loss. With a short turnaround between that game and this one against the Renegades, the Heat medical staff opted to keep him in Brisbane for further assessment and treatment.
The Renegades may yet welcome Australian Test quick, James Pattinson, back from injury. Pattinson had to leave the Australian Tour of England in July, and was later diagnosed with a stress fracture in his lower back.
Renegades: Aaron Finch (C), Fawad Ahmed, Jos Buttler, Tom Cooper, Alex Doolan, Andrew Fekete, Muthiah Muralidaran, Peter Nevill, Aaron O’Brien, James Pattinson, Nathan Rimmington, Ben Rohrer, Will Sheridan
Heat: Joe Burns, Dan Christian, Ben Cutting, Peter Forrest, Cameron Gannon, Nathan Hauritz, Craig Kieswetter, Chris Lynn, Alister McDermott, Luke Pomersbach, Chris Sabburg, Mark Steketee, Daniel Vettori. (Captain, and 12th Man to be named. One further to be omitted.)
