United’s Dutch defender could be ending his short stay at Old Trafford…
Manchester United’s Dutch fullback Alex Buttner could be leaving Old Trafford after only one year at the club, reports the Metro.
The 24-year-old joined the Premier League champions last summer, but struggled for game times behind a revitalised Patrice Evra. Fabio has also returned from a loan spell at QPR, so Buttner could find himself as third choice if he stays at United. Besiktas and Benfica are repotedly indterested, according to Buttner’s agent.
“During the match against Sevilla in the past weekend, interest was expressed,” he told Renascenca Radio.
“He put in a good performance. There was interest from Benfica to sign a defender, but that news is already history.
“Two days later, Benfica confirmed to me that they would keep the two left-backs [Lorenzo Melgarejo and Bruno Cortez] that they have left in the squad.
“I am currently negotiating with Besiktas, but with Benfica? No. Benfica showed interest and then gave up.”
Buttner only made five Premier League appearances last term, and he will surely be eager to move clubs and guarantee some first-team football. With two weeks left of the transfer window, United still haven’t brought in a marquee signing this new boss David Moyes arrived at the club. Shipping out dead wood like Buttner will seemingly be easier than recruiting a big name before the end of the month.
