David Moyes made a last ditch attempt to steal Ozil from Arsene Wenger’s grasp…
Manchester United made a deadline day approach to hijack Arsenal’s record £42m Mesut Ozil deal, reports the Mirror.
The Gunners eventually sealed the deal for the 24-year-old German playmaker late on Monday evening, making Ozil the most expensive ever import into the Premier League.
United signed Everton’s Belgian midfielder Marouane Fellaini for £27.5m, and also missed out on a deal to bring in Athletic Bilbao’s Ander Herrera.
It turns out though that Scottish boss David Moyes made desperate attempts to snatch Ozil from Arsene Wenger’s grasp. United representatives made hectic phone calls on deadline day morning to the Real Madrid hierarchy and Mesut Ozil’s officials, but a deal for Ozil to move to north-London was already in place.
Wenger has been corresponding with Ozil via telephone for the past week, and had convinced the German of his exciting project at the Emirates.
The news will only sour the mood of United fans already disappointed and confused by the fact their club left it so late to do any business in the transfer market.
The talented attacker joins the Gunners on a £140,000-per-week contract, and has been given the no.11 shirt, which is already remarkably one of the highest selling shirts at the club after just one day.
