Royals keen to bring England international to the Madjeski Stadium this month.
Manchester United striker Danny Welbeck is wanted by Premier League strugglers Reading on loan until the end of the season, reports The Sun.
The England striker enjoyed a fine Euro 2012 but has stagnated this season at Old Trafford, managing just one Premier League goal all term.
The 22-year-old has struggled for starts, faced with competition from summer signing Robin van Persie, Wayne Rooney and Javier Hernandez and boss Sir Alex Ferguson is reportedly ready to let Welbeck leave until the summer.
But the lowly Royals currently sit second-bottom of the league, five points away from safety, and it is unclear if Welbeck would consider a move to the Madjeski Stadium.
Meanwhile, Reading have signed Crawley midfielder Hope Akpan for £300k on a three-and-a-half year deal.
Boss Brian McDermott said: “We have known all about Hope for a very long time.
“He has a great pedigree, coming through the ranks at Everton. There were a lot of clubs in for him during this window but once he heard of our interest this was the only place he wanted to play.
“He’s 21 and is a player we feel can play at this level.”
