Striker transfer merry-go-round set to ensue…
Manchester United could sensationally pip Premier League rivals Chelsea to Anzhi Makhachkala’s striker Samuel Eto’o, reports Italian newspaper Gazzetta Dello Sport.
The 32-year-old’s agent Claudio Vuigorelli will meet United officials this week to discus a possible deal for the multiple Champions League winner.
Eto’o bagged 21 for Anzhi last term, but is now available as the Russian club have transfer listed their entire squad – due to a change in club policy to focus on youth development rather than marquee signings.
United and Chelsea are not alone in their pursuit of the legendary forward, with Napoli and Inter Milan both interested in bringing him back to Serie A.
Interestingly, the futures of Eto’o and Wayne Rooney could be closely linked. In Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho’s perfect world, he will bring in the English striker from United. If this proves impossible though, the Portuguese boss will settle for Eto’o, who he managed during his trophy laden stint at Inter Milan.
Alternatively, if United do give in and sell Rooney to Chelsea, they could themselves buy Samuel Eto’o as a direct replacement. If they keep Rooney, they are unlikely to want to sign the Cameroonian forward too, as they already have Javier Hernandez, Robin Van Persie and Danny Welbeck all capable of playing up top.
