Manchester United sent scouts to watch Sporting Lisbon’s midfielder William Carvalho play at the weekend, Sporting Witness reports.
The 21-year-old won his first full cap for Portugal in 2013, and is likely to go to the World Cup with his country following a very impressive start to the season.
Sporting Lisbon sit in second place in the Portuguese league, two points ahead of Porto, and have a genuine chance of unexpectedly winning the league title.
Carvalho has a mammoth €45m release clause, although in reality United would be able to secure him for far cheaper than this.
At the weekend, David Moyes’ side lost to Stoke, and the central midfield combination of Tom Cleverley and Michael Carrick were vilified for their shocking performances.
It’s clear that United will invest in a new central midfielder in the summer, and may turn to Carvalho as one of their prime targets.
The midfielder is as effective defensively as he is going forward, and provides his side with a combative thrust from the middle of the park.
This term, he’s scored twice in 17 appearances.
