Manchester United were offered the chance to sign Mesut Ozil for ‘substantially less’ than the £42.4m for which he eventually joined Arsenal, according to Daily Telegraph journalist Henry Winter.
Real Madrid reportedly handed United the chance to sign the Germany international, 24, four weeks ago but, despite liking Ozil, the Red Devils declined.
Winter claims United believed in Wayne Rooney as their tempo-setting number ten, with Shinji Kagawa viewed as an alternative option behind central striker Robin van Persie.
Spanish football expert Graham Hunter, meanwhile, claims both Ozil and his father, who also acts as his agent, were desperate for a move to United and waited until the eleventh hour on transfer deadline day for a bid from Old Trafford before opting to join Arsenal:
