The Belgian international may be available this winter after struggling to impress new manager Mauricio Pochettino this season, finding himself out of favour in the starting lineup.
Still, the 27-year-old has previously shown himself to be one of Europe’s top defenders, able to play to good effect at either centre-back or left-back.
His versatility could make him a useful signing for United, who missed out on a similar player in Thomas Vermaelen in the summer, as he chose to leave Arsenal for Barcelona instead of Old Trafford.
