The English champions put themselves back in title contention.
It was make or break for under pressure Manchester United manager David Moyes as a loss to Arsenal would have left the Premier League champions 11 points adrift.
Yet when it mattered the Scot’s side provided the performance needed with a goal from former Gunner Robin Van Persie enough to secure a 1-0 victory.
It means that after Manchester City and Tottenham Hotspur both also lost and Chelsea drew at home, the Red Devils are right back in the title race.
Here’s how fanatix rates the United stars from a solid win:
David De Gea – 6
The goalkeeper had little to do and the Spaniard’s only memorable moment was a collision with captain Nemanja Vidic that forced the defender off.
Chris Smalling – 6
A solid if uninspired performance from Smalling who looks far more comfortable at centre-back than right-back, but did manage to keep Santi Cazorla quiet.
Nemanja Vidic – 7
The skipper looked commanding at the back until the encounter with De Gea forced the Serb off at half-time to be replaced by Tom Cleverley.
Jonny Evans – 8
A strong and stylish display from the defender who is fast becoming the natural successor to Rio Ferdinand at the back.
Patrice Evra – 6
Not one of the Frenchman’s most impressive displays although the left-back was solid defensively, but perhaps didn’t get forward as often as usual.
Phil Jones – 8
Was equally brilliant in central midfield and then later in defence and Jones is likely to become a key player for United in the very near future.
Michael Carrick – 6
Wasn’t quite as astute with the Englishman’s passing as usual but the experience and positioning of Carrick was vital for the win.
Antonio Valencia – 7
It was a superb showing from the winger who has looked a little lost at times this campaign and showed a perfect balance of defence and attacking flair.
Shinji Kagawa – 5
Perhaps the only week link in the United side, as the midfielder cannot fully adapt to playing on the left-hand flank and needs a more central role.
Wayne Rooney – 8
The most energetic and impressive performer on the pitch who laid on a inch perfect ball for Van Persie’s goal, but also missed a great chance to make it two in the second half.
Robin Van Persie – 7
The Dutchman has found the striker’s shooting boots again and that’s now three in three against the 30-year-old’s former side and also the seventh league goal of the season for Van Persie.
