In what could be one of the more intriguing transfers this summer, Manchester United sent scouts to watch Liverpool owned goalkeeper Pepe Reina play for Napoli, reports Sky Italia journalist Gianluca di Marzio.
The Spanish stopper, once rated as one of the world’s finest, is seemingly surplus to requirements at Anfield, with Brendan Rodgers signing Simon Mignolet before the start of this season and sending Reina out on loan to Italy.
Manchester United currently have impressive young Spaniard David de Gea between the sticks, so it would be interesting to see whether Reina would simply provide competition, or be signed as a direct replacement.
Reina is a technically outstanding goalkeeper, and has fantastic distribution skills as well. Towards the end of his Liverpool career though, he began to consistently make errors, but his form has improved under Rafa Benitez in Serie A this term.
