Old Trafford outfit eyeing Reds stopper.
Sir Alex Ferguson is ready to ditch David de Gea – and buy a keeper in the transfer window.
Manchester United boss Ferguson has given the Spaniard every chance to fill the jersey at Old Trafford but doubts about his ability to handle the physical side are growing.
And the shrewd United chief has asked supremo David Gill and the club’s American owners to fund a buy for a genuine number one.
De Gea is often targeted by the opposition when it comes to set pieces and high balls and his sheer lack of physique is a problem.
Ferguson’s spies have been checking on alternatives for weeks but now the United boss is in serious discussions with Gill and the Glazers about a kitty for a new man.
Stoke City’s Asmir Begovic is under review and even Liverpool’s Pepe Reina is a possibility. Both can play in Europe this season.

David de Gea struggled when he first arrived at Old Trafford but the youngster has improved considerably over the past few months.
While Man United have been leaking goals with alarming regularity, that has in main been down to poor defending and not due to poor displays from the former Atletico Madrid man.
That said, Sir Alex Ferguson may feel that Liverpool ‘keeper Pepe Reina is a better fit for the Old Trafford side, but a United and Liverpool simply don’t do transfer deals and such a move seems extremely unlikely.
Now into his eighth season at Anfield, Reina knows all too well how a move to United would go down with the Anfield faithful: he would become the most hated man in the country.
Should this be a barrier to Reina’s ambition? Perhaps not but there is a reason that very few players move between the two fierce rivals and Reina would be a brave man to even comtemplate such a switch.
A lot could depend on how much belief Reina has that Brendan Rodgers can turn the Liverpool ship around. Following the spectacular failures that were Roy Hodgson and Kenny Dalglish, the Merseyside outfit are hoping that the former Swansea City manager can bring an end to the club’s lean years.
The offer of a move to a club that can challenge for major honours and provide regular Champions League action would be hard for Reina to turn down.
Another factor could be Pepe Reina’s hopes of unseating Iker Casillas as Spain’s number one starter. Having seen the Real Madrid man get dropped by Jose Mourinho the Liverpool keeper could be led to believe that a high-profile move to Man United could get the attention of La Roja coach Vicente del Bosque.
