United have one week to make their marquee summer signing…
Manchester United boss David Moyes has admitted his side needs to make new signings before the end of the month, reports BBC Sport.
Since the Scottish manager’s arrival, the Red Devils have failed to bring in a single big money signing, despite submitting offers for Thiago, Cesc Fabregas and Everton pair Marouane Fellaini and Leighton Baines.
Moyes knows that with just a week left of the transfer window, there is a ‘need’ to get new players signed quickly.
“There is a need to do it but there’s no pressure to do it,” said the new United boss.
“It’s something we’ve been talking about since I took the job on 1 July. I have an idea of where I’d like to strengthen but we won’t do it because people tell us we should be signing players.”
United look thin in central midfield after Paul Scholes’ retirement. With Ryan Giggs approaching 40 and Darren Fletcher’s health problems, Moyes has earmarked a centre-midfielder as a prime target.
So far though, his attempts to bring someone in have failed. After winning their opening Premier League match 4-1 away at Swansea, Moyes is upbeat that his current squad are more than capable of winning trophies this season.
“If the right players are available, great. But if not, the first thing we’ll do is encourage our own young players in the squad to do as well as they did last year.”
“We don’t have a big, big list because there are only certain quality players we want to bring in to the club. The plan is we’ll bring in one or two if we can.”
The Premier League champions take on Chelsea on Monday night in the first blockbuster of the season, but United will likely have to face nemesis Jose Mourinho with their current crop of players.
