City want Barca star at the Etihad Stadium.
Manchester City have entered the race for unwanted Barcelona striker David Villa, according to the Daily Star.
Arsenal, Chelsea and Swansea have all been linked with a January move for the 31-year-old but City boss Roberto Mancini is ready to beat his Premier League rivals to the Spaniard’s signature next month.
Villa has been a peripheral figure at the Nou Camp this season, starting just six league games for the Catalans – but showing that his goal-scoring touch has not deserted him, finding the net five times.
The Spain international was regarded as one of the most deadly forwards in Europe but suffered a broken leg last term and spent eight months on the sidelines, missing his country’s triumphant Euro 2012 campaign.
The World Cup winner has found it hard to re-establish himself in a Barcelona side that boasts Pedro, Alexis Sanchez, Cristian Tello and, of course, Lionel Messi.
It is understood that Villa is keen to leave Barca next month and Arsenal were thought to be leading contenders for his signature.
But, after watching his side fail to score against a stubborn Sunderland side on Boxing Day, City boss Roberto Mancini is keen to hi-jack the Gunners move for the former Valencia striker, who could join become the latest big-name forward to move to the Etihad Stadium.
