Silva cannot understand why Mourinho doesn’t play his national team-mate.
Ahead of the Premier League clash between Chelsea and Manchester City, David Silva has sent a vote of confidence to national team-mate Juan Mata.
The Citizens star has voiced the attacking midfielder’s confusion as to why Jose Mourinho doesn’t play Mata more often since returning to take the reigns at Stamford Bridge.
“It did surprise me when he was dropped and I don’t think I was the only one,” Silva was quoted by the Daily Mail.
“He is a top player and I think he has given Chelsea a lot in his time.
“As well as the time we spent playing together at Valencia, we were mates before that and besides him being a great player, he is a really nice guy as well.”
The midfield duo were team-mates at the Mestalla Stadium for three years between 2007 and 2010 and tore up opposition defences in La Liga for fun during that time.
Both have enjoyed enormous success and plaudits since arriving in England, but Mata has fallen out-of-favour with Mourinho and has been strongly linked with a move away from west London – with Paris Saint-Germain and Tottenham Hotspur the most keen.
The two clubs have started strongly in 2013/14, keeping up with the pace at the top of the English top tier and in their Champions League groups.
The match between the duo at the Bridge is likely to be a close encounter and if one side were to a win it would send out a clear intention of their title credentials.
Mourinho however has never lost a home league game in 64 matches in charge of Chelsea.
