Man United secured a 1-0 win over Tottenham Hotspur at Old Trafford on Saturday, but they had to overcome some nervy moments late on to seal all three points.
Here is how Louis Van Gaal’s players rated in the opening-day win…
Sergio Romero: 7/10
Some nervy moments from the Argentinian as he was indecisive coming off his line. However, was solid for the most part as he stepped in for David De Gea and could become a more permanent presence between the posts.
Matteo Darmian: 8/10
Replaced by Antonio Valencia late on, but the Italian enjoyed a strong first appearance for the club as he impressed both defensively and going forward.
Chris Smalling: 8/10
The England ace was a rock at the heart of the United defence, stepping in when Romero should have taken command of the situation.
Daley Blind: 7/10
Blind did his job well alongside Smalling and produced a solid performance that played a part in the hosts keeping a clean sheet.
Luke Shaw: 7/10
Wasn’t as sharp as he has been in pre-season, but the left-back was certainly a reliable presence on the left flank and will now look for consistency.
