Despite United’s 2-1 away win over Arsenal on Saturday, which has elevated them into the Champions League places, Van Gaal has seen his side fall 13 points behind league leaders Chelsea, while they were also eliminated from the League Cup by MK Dons of League One.
The source claims that United are not convinced Van Gaal is the man to take them forward and want to sign Ancelotti, despite the fact a deal looks almost impossible to pull off.
Spanish newspaper Marca are also mentioned here, and is seemingly their belief that United remain interested in bringing in the Real Madrid boss, despite the Italian showing no signs of wishing to leave.
Ancelotti revealed this week that he has twice turned down the Old Trafford hot seat, first to replace Sir Alex Ferguson and then David Moyes. Last season, he guided Madrid to their tenth Champions League / European Cup success.
