Manchester United responded to Manchester City’s win at Tottenham by hammering Arsenal 8-2 at Old Trafford
United took the lead after a delightful chip caught the Gunners defence square. Indecision rom Johan Djorou allowed Danny Welbeck to slip past him and the England international nodded the ball over the advancing Wojciech Szczesny. Despite being overrun, Arsenal had a golden chance to equalise when Theo Walcott was brought down in the penalty area by Jonny Evans but Robin van Persie szaw his weak spot kick saved by David de Gea.
The Red Devils made the Dutchman pay for his mistake almost instantly with Ashley Young curling a beautiful long range shot into the top corner yet there was time for more drama before half time. Wayne Rooney made is 3-0 with an excellent free kick that Szczesny got fingertips to but was unable to keep out though Walcott gave Arsenal hope with a goal in first half stoppage time.
Arsenal threatened to come back into the game with Van Persie and Arshaving both looking dangerous but it was United who scored next through another Rooney free-kick that totally deceived the Arsenal goalkeeper. The England international then turned provider as his pass split the opposition defence and fed Nani who coolly chipped the exposed Szczesny.
Park Ji-sung then made it 6-1, Van Persie scored from close range and then a penalty from Rooney sealed his hat trick before Young sealed the rout in injury time with another excellent strike.
