Bundesliga club want Turk to return to Germany when his Liverpool loan expires.
Liverpool will face competition from Borussia Dortmund if they want to sign loanee Nuri Sahin on a permanent deal, reports talkSPORT.
Sahin joined Liverpool in the summer on a season-long from Real Madrid, with the Reds beating off competition from Arsenal and Tottenham to land the talented Turk.
But the 23-year-old has struggled at Anfield and some encouraging early displays have been tempered by some underwhelming performances that have seen Sahin relegated to the bench in recent weeks.
Even so, Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers is understood to be keen to land the midfielder on a permanent deal but will wait until the end of the current campaign to make a final decision.
If the Northern Irishman does decided to pursue Sahin, he will competition from Bundesliga giants Dortmund, however.
The Germans sold Sahin to Real for £8.1m in 2011 but now want to re-sign the midfielder and have reportedly approached Real regarding his availability.
It is understood that Dortmund will press ahead with a move for Sahin next summer which will leave Liverpool with a fight on their hands if they want the Turkey international to remain at Anfield.
