Following the news that Brazilian midfielder Lucas will be out for two months with knee ligament damage, Liverpool have earmarked AC Milan’s Dutchman Nigel De Jong as a potential replacement, the Independent claims.
The Reds are desperate for a top four finish, but with Lucas (the player who has made tackles than anyone else in the league) injured, Liverpool’s chances of a Champions League finish could be severely dented.
As a result, manager Brendan Rodgers is desperate to bring in a suitable replacement as quickly as possible, and De Jong seemingly ticks all the boxes.
He’s defensively astute, and provides his team with a platform from which the more attacking players can perform. He also has Premier League experience, having won the title with Manchester City in 2011/12. Like Lucas, he can tackle, intercept, and prefers to pass the ball simply to teammates rather than look for ambitious balls.
Having been a virtual ever-present for Milan this season though, it’s unlikely that the San Siro club will let the 29-year-old go without a fight.
If the Reds offer enough money though, they could bring De Jong back to England.
