Brendan Rodgers is desperate to sign Benfica’s Nemanja Matic…
Liverpool have earmarked a January move for Benfica’s Serbian midfielder Nemanja Matic as a priority, but Chelsea and Real Madrid could also be interested, reports the Express.
The 25-year-old Serbian international used to play for Chelsea between 2009 and 2011, but only managed to make two league appearances, and was subsequently shipped out to Benfica as part of the deal that brought battling Brazilian Ramires to Stamford Bridge.
Matic has shone for the Portuguese side ever since, and has alerted Real Madrid and Liverpool with his excellent performances. Chelsea’s current boss Jose Mourinho is quietly seething the player was ever allowed to leave, and could even bid big money to bring the elegant midfielder back.
Matic won the Portuguese Player of the Year award last season, thanks to his fantastic passing and ability to recycle possession in the centre of the park.
Traditionally, Benfica do not sell their star payers cheaply, and in the past few seasons the likes or Ramires, Angel Di Maria and David Luiz have all left for huge money. Matic could set a prospective club back around £35m, which seems steep for a 25-year-old midfielder with only seven international caps.
